CATEGORIES OF COMPUTERS

1)   Personal computers

-         Definition

Computer that can perform all of its input, processing, output, and storage activities by itself.

-         Examples

Desktop computers and notebook computers

2)   Mobile computers

-         Definition

Personal computer that we can carry from place to place.

-         Examples

Tablet PCs, smart phone, PDAs

3)   Mobile devices

-         Definition

Small enough to carry in a pocket, usually do not have disk drives. Instead, these devices store programs and data permanently on special memory inside the system unit or on small storage media such as memory cards.

-         Examples

Smart phone, PDAs, r-book readers, handheld computers, portable media players, and digital cameras

4)   Game consoles

-         Definition

Mobile computing device designed for single-player or multi-player video games.

-          Examples

Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Nintendo’s Wii, Sony’s PlayStation 3

5)   Servers

-         Definition

Controls access to the hardware, software, and other resources on a network and provides a centralized storage area for programs, data, and information.

-         Example

 There are web servers that send out web pages, mail servers that deliver e - mail , list servers that administer mailing lists, FTP servers that hold FTP sites and deliver files to users who request them, and name servers that provide information about Internet host names.
The central computer on a LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN) is also a server.

6)   Mainframes

-         Definition

Large, expensive, powerful computer that can handle hundreds or thousands of connected users simultaneously.

-          Examples

 IBM zSeries, System z9 and System z10 servers. Mac Wilson

7)   Supercomputers

-         Definition

Fastest, most powerful computer and the most expensive.

8)   Embedded computers

-         Definition

Special-purpose computer that functions as a component in a larger product.

-         Examples

Consumer electronics : mobile and digital telephones, digital televisions, cameras, video recorders, DVD players and recorders, answering machines

Home automation devices : thermostats, sprinkling systems, security monitoring systems, appliances, lights

Automobiles : antilock brakes, engine control modules, airbag controller, cruise control

Process controllers and robotics : remote monitoring system, power monitors, machine controllers, medical devices

Computer devices and office machine : keyboards, printers, fax and copy machines
